Cube Records

In October 1970 David Platz started FLY Records as a launch-pad for Marc Bolan and his band T Rex (formerly Tyrannosaurus Rex). The first single released on the label was Ride A White Swan, which gave T Rex their breakthrough, taking them to #2 in the singles chart, whilst their subsequent debut FLY Records album 'Electric Warrior' gave T Rex their first #1 album. It remains a staple in all-time best album charts.

By mid-1972 FLY had evolved into CUBE Records as the label continued to develop new artists including Joan Armtrading, the JSD Band, Budgie and Bakerloo, whilst reissuing classic material from the likes of Michael Chapman (featuring Mick Ronson), Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, Victor Jara and The Pirates.

Hits still came in the Seventies courtesy of Jimmy 'Gonna Make You An Offer' Helms, Gordon 'Heartsong' Giltrap, Quantum 'Lone Ranger' Jump, but by the Eighties the publishing side of Bucks Music became its focal point and FLY Records / CUBE Records were used primarily to release albums featuring music Bucks' composers like Laurie 'The Professionals' Johnson and Nigel 'Hetty Wainthrop' Hess had created for Screen and Stage.

In the early Nineties the FLY Records / CUBE Records labels were given a new lease of life, albeit a short one, using the FLEA catalogue prefix, it's main artist being the well respected Metropolis (a London based Jazz-Funk band, sampled years later by Roni Size for his Mercury Prize winning album 'New Forms'). After Peter Hunningale & Tippa Irie's 'Summer Love' single grazed the lower end of the singles chart the label was once again taken off the Bucks Music Group list of priorities.

In 2002 a sister label CUBE SOUNDTRACKS was launched to release soundtrack albums.
