dirty pretty things composite 1
The drama unfolds through the eyes of an illegal immigrant, Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a Nigerian doctor in exile, who works as a minicab driver by day and as the front desk attendant at the Baltic Hotel - the kind of hotel that package holiday companies, and the local sex trade, use - by night.
Okwe lives on the sofa in a flat rented by a proud Turkish asylum-seeker named Senay (Audrey 'Amélie' Tautou - seen here completely at the other end of the characterisation spectrum of her Amélie persona), who works as a maid at the Baltic Hotel. While Okwe aims to return to his family in Nigeria, Senay fantasises about a glamourous new life in New York. Rather than falling foul to a corny romance, Okwe and Senay are drawn together through the care and support they give each other in a lifestyle that could easily be consumed by self-interest.
The delicate balance of Okwe's life is overturned when he makes a shocking discovery in one of the rooms and uncovers a callous underworld where human organs are commodities and a (real or fake) passport for citizenship.
MUSIC NOTES
Nathan Larson's score serves as a musical palette, mixing Okwe's emotions and thoughts alongside his various, repetitive, environments (cab-driving, hotel work, 'home' life). Pensive motifs, repeated in various rhythmical frameworks, illustrate Okwe's carefully observed wistfulness, whilst frenetic beats interpret Okwe's heightened sense of action in moments of urgency. Nathan's claustrophobic metropolitan soundscape concisely captures the sensibility of twilight London, chock full of deserted streets, flashing blue-lit neon signs, passing traffic headlights and distant taillights.

Formerly as a member of the band Shudder To Think (signed to Sony) Nathan was involved in the band's critically acclaimed scores for "High Art" (BMG) and "First Love, Last Rites" (Epic).
Nathan's score for Boy's Don't Cry (Kotch) established him as a film scoring force in his own right.
On "First Love, First Rites" Nathan wrote and/ or produced tracks featuring Billy Corgan, Jeff Buckley, Liz Phair, John Doe, and many others. (Buckley had previously toured in the States as bass player for Nathan to promote his first solo album 'Mind Science Of The Mind').
