Ivor Novello Winner 2007 Virgin Queen Front CoverVirgin Queen Front CoverSet against a backdrop of some of Britain's most beautiful houses and landscapes, Paula Milne's powerfully-authored drama serial, The Virgin Queen, explores the full sweep of the long and eventful life of England's iconic queen - from her days of fear as a potential victim of her sister's terror; through her great love affair with Robert Dudley; into her years of triumph over the Armada; and finally her old age and her last enigmatic relationship with her young protégé, the Earl of Essex.

Director Coky Giedroyc, says:
"Elizabeth had fundamentally a real pathological fear of intimacy,"
"Her father (Henry VIII) represented everything male, and once you get close to a man you get killed. I also think politically, as a virgin, she was coming in after Mary Tudor and she was giving herself the iconic status of the Virgin Mary.”

"It was a deeply religious time and devotion to the Virgin Mary would have been intense, and I think that Elizabeth created the 'brand' of Elizabeth The Virgin Queen, the Virgin Mother of God, the absolutely all-powerful female."

Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britton's godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University - fortunately for the acting world he concentrated on writing music. Following the early critical success of 'Eureka Street' and now of the BBC period dramas 'North and South' and 'The Virgin Queen Soundtrack album', Martin is one of the most original composers working in the industry today.

In the summer of 2005 Martin wrote a haunting score to the feature film 'Pierrepoint', directed by Adrian Shergold. Other recent credits include the 'The Wife of Bath' from the BBC's contemporary adaptation of the Canterbury Tales, the acclaimed contemporary drama 'Dirty Filthy Love' and the thriller 'She's Gone' starring Ray Winstone.

MEDIAEVAL BAEBES

The Mediaeval Baebes are a group of young women who share a passion for music several centuries old but are as 21st century as they come.

Their debut album SALVA NOS went straight into the Classical Chart at Number 2, stayed in the top ten for three months and beat off all the big names in the business; it was the eighth biggest seller of the year and the only classical debut to go silver in 1997; to date it's sold over 60,000 copies in the UK alone.
MIRABILIS, their 5th studio album and their most recent, has been acclaimed by many as their strongest album to date.
Most of the tracks are original compositions by Katharine Blake and the group's other members. The lyrics draw on 13th, 14th and 15th century poetry, set to music composed in the twentieth century in a medieval idiom. With its broader range of harmonies and stronger percussion, the group has a distinctively up-beat feel where 21st century technology meets 13th century culture.
